What we do

in piano lessons

IMG_1755.jpg

As a parent of three piano students, I have been truly impressed by the way that the instruction has been adapted to meet each child’s age, learning style, and personality. In addition, I value that the students are taught in a non-stressful manner and therefore are truly able to develop a love for the instrument.

Learn

The core of our program is learning to play music at the piano. Instead of assigning a single method book series to all students, we match students with the method that best suits their age, learning style, and interests. We introduce repertoire in a variety of styles, from classical and jazz to pop and rock, and everything in between. As students develop their own musical tastes, lessons are tailored to individual preference.

PLay

Our study of music theory and history is not limited to dry workbooks. Instead we have fun learning through playing board games, card games, and games at the piano that lead students to discover the theory and history behind the pieces they are studying.

Move

We reinforce learning using whole body rhythm exercises, rhythm instruments, floor piano, floor staff and whiteboard. Incorporating movement into lessons keeps students focused, energized, and engaged.

USE Technology

We use technology in a variety of ways to enhance learning. In addition to traditional flashcards and rhythm drills, we use apps to reinforce the basics. We also use play along tracks to increase rhythm and sight-reading skills.

IMPROVISE

Improvisation provides us an opportunity for creative exploration of sound and a space to experiment with the different concepts we are studying. It is an excellent tool for training students to truly listen as they play.

Compose

Students develop their understanding of musical form and elements through expressing their own creative ideas. We compose music on the staff and using the Garage Band app.

Party!

Piano parties give students a chance to share their favorite pieces and practice performance skills in front of a supportive audience. They add a fun social component to an otherwise solo activity.

In addition to performance Piano Parties include ensemble playing and group games.

Practice

The fun doesn’t stop when the lesson ends. We teach students how to practice and send them home with materials to make practice a positive experience. Access to at-home subscriptions to piano apps are included in tuition. Themed studio wide practice challenges keep students motivated.
