It’s great to meet you!
I can’t wait to share my love of music and learning with you! I believe that musical communication is an innate human ability and that my job is to provide students with the skills needed to unlock their creative potential. I love leading students to discover and develop their unique talents and motivations.
I enjoy working with children of all ages. As a former education major, I took a number of education classes and completed field work in general elementary school classes and elementary and middle school music classes for children with special needs. Through college, I worked as a team leader in after care programs and as a camp counselor. Now as a homeschooling parent, I am deeply immersed in the world of education and closely follow research about learning and education. In addition to teaching my own children, I have designed and taught homeschool co-op classes for preschool and elementary school students.
My musical background includes experience with multiple instruments and a variety of styles. My fascination with piano began at a young age; some of my earliest memories involve playing with my toy piano. Throughout my elementary years, I taught myself by ear. In middle school, I borrowed a stack of sheet music from a friend and dove in. I finally began formal lessons at age 12, which I continued on and off through my post-graduate years. In addition to piano, I played clarinet at Carnegie Hall with the All-Eastern band, played bass in the high school jazz band and Sherwood High School’s Rock ‘N Roll Revival, and played guitar in rock bands.
I received a B.A. in Music with honors from Goucher College. My teachers included Molly Stier, Matthew Lane, and Katherine Jacobson Fleisher.
As a musician and teacher, I am continually striving to learn more through expanding my knowledge of piano repertoire and my knowledge of pedagogy. I belong to two international communities of music teachers, Vibrant Music Teaching and Top Music Pro, both of which provide a wealth of ideas and professional development opportunities. To continue developing my own musicianship, I belong to Tonebase, an organization that provides access to master classes with internationally renowned artists.
I maintain an active performance schedule. Most recently, I have performed as an accompanist the The Bethesda Little Theater for their production of The Soul of Broadway. I also perform regularly on bass guitar with a number of local bands. When I am not busy with music, I like to read, paint, explore the outdoors with my kids, and practice martial arts.
As the mother of three children, who are a constant source of insight and inspiration, I understand the challenges of supporting your child’s learning at home. In addition to teaching your child during lessons, I’m here to help you as a piano parent.
